Vince Breaux hosted and competed in the Cajun Grunt IV Throwers Meet on June 1st at UL-L. The five thowing events were Hammer, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin and Weight Throws. A point total is calculated for each event and then the five events are added together for a weight pentathlon total. Vince ended the everts with the highest weight pentathlon total of 3457, but was followed closely by Reed Masters from Texas with a 3447. Nine of the throwers scored more than 3,000 points.
Florida, Alabama, Arkansas, Texas and Louisiana had entries in the meet. It was the biggest meet so far with 30 competing. UL-L and LSU track and field officials were on hand to keep the meet running smoothly.
The meet was held in Texas for 10 years before Vince took over having it at the UL-L track complex for the 4th year. Three of the throwers had been at all 14 of the meets. Vince happens to be one of the three.
For those still standing after the 5 throwing events, there were the ultra weights waiting for those willing to try. Ultra weights consist of a 98#, 200# and a 300# throw. It's not easy to throw 300#s. An 81 year old German, Pat Carstensen, drove from Florida specifically to throw the ultra weights. He threw all three including the 300#.
It took about 8 hours to complete the Weight Pentathlon and Ultra Weight Throws. Of the 30 entered, 12 threw the 98#, 11 threw the 200# and 8 threw the 300#. Next time you get the chance, try picking up, much less throwing, a 300# weight!!! Good luck! Congratulations to everyone who competed and thanks to Vince for sharing the results.
See if you can figure out which one of the photos below is Vince throwing the 98#, 200# and the 300#!
