With diabetes rates increasing not only in adults but in children also, one can never be too cautious on ways to help prevent this leading killer. (Statistic: More than 25 million people in the U.S. have diabetes). Here are three tips that can help you lower your risk by up to 20 percent!
- Eat your Greens: Load up on leafy greens (such as spinach, romaine, kale, etc). Just one serving per day was shown to decrease diabetes risk by almost 10 percent.
- Low fat Diet: Keeping your fat intake lower than 30% of calories helps improve pancreatic function. Your pancreas is the organ that produces insulin, thus a better pancreas is the bets way to control diabetes risk.
- Nuts and seeds: A study done on middle aged and older adults found that the fat found in walnuts and flaxseed known as ALA (alpha-linolenic acid) lowered the risk of developing diabetes by 20 percent.
