The National Senior Games were held in July with the track and field portion scheduled at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Over 12,000 people were entered in everything from archery to volleyball. The age groups were in 5 year increments from 50 to a few in the 100+ age group.
Vince Breaux competed in all of the field events, 70-74 age group. These throwing events averaged around 30 entries in his age group. Vince won the Javelin, was third in the Shot Put, third in the Hammer and fifth in the Discus Throw. With so many throwing events and age groups, it took four days to complete these events.
While throwing the Shot Put, the officials asked his age group if they would mind allowing 2 athletes to throw during our round. It was unanimous to let them throw, since they were 101 and 102 years of age. They all sat back and watched the enthusiasm that these two older athletes showed and how much fun they were having.
Qualifying for nationals is accomplished at a state meet during the even years and Nationals are held during odd years. Vince is looking forward to the 2017 Nationals.
Congratulations to Vince!
